Home Page

This website contains three distinctive study zones designed to recognise the levels of exposure which you will have attained at any particular time.

Whether you are an absolute beginner or well-advanced with your Italian language studies, you will find something here which will help you develop your expertise in the use of Italian. The information you will find on this site is not intended to be the sole source of your study, but it will explain and amplify certain points not easily reconciled in the classroom. To this end, much of the content will be derived from questions which you yourselves will want to ask, making the site a source of information directly relevant to your own specific needs.

In the Entry Level Zone, designed for absolute beginners and students embarking on their first year of study, you will find a comprehensive guide to how the language is pronounced, as well as various grammar tips and simple dialogues.

There will be technical explanations on nouns, verbs and some of the more everyday constructions of the language which you will need to master, so that you can begin to speak Italian confidently with your friends or fellow students.

In the Intermediate Zone, for students in their second and third year of study, you will find more technical information and explanations on the more complex structures of the language. For example, combined object pronouns will be shown in tabular format to make it easier to understand the concept.

There will be examples of dialogues using the more advanced structures of Italian to prepare you for the leap to a more advanced level of study.

In the Advanced Zone, you will find detailed explanations on the various different moods of the language to enable you to express yourself in a more elegant fashion. Articles will also appear, shown in English and Italian, to enable you to see how the Italian used in everyday life differs from the basic forms you have been used to in your first few years of study. Idiomatic expressions will feature strongly here, and you will also find comprehensive tips on how to write a formal letter, understanding the phrases which are used in this sphere.

The links in each of the zones are dedicated to those zones. As this site grows, and the pages for students’ questions grow with it, you may find that although you are, for example, at intermediate level, the answer to a question you have asked is found in the Advanced Zone. Certain elements of Italian cross over from one level of expertise to another, and indeed some more advanced structures are used in basic everyday circumstances (the subjunctive being key among them). Nonetheless, I have structured the zones relative to the level of study which you would encounter at school or college, to remain commensurate with your own progress going forward.
